Download old versions of Kindle for Mac for Mac. Download old versions of Kindle for Mac for Mac.
I am having the same problem trying to download the app from Apple's App Store. I'm running iOS 9.3.5 on a 1st generation iPad (maybe 2nd generation - not sure). When I try to install the Amazon Kindle app for iPad, I get the error message 'This application requires iOS 10.0 or later. You must update to iOS 10.0 in order to download and use this application.' There are no options given to download an older compatible version of the app. My device can't be updated to iOS 10.
Has anyone found a way around this? Unfortunately Apple has rules in place for developers that force them to stop supporting older OS versions. So at some point an update to the app will finally kill support for older OSs. When purchasing an app in the store it will only give access to the current version. If that version is incompatible then it will give you the error you are seeing and not allow the purchase. If a person had already purchased the app and it is in their library they would be given the option to download an older compatible version if the latest was incompatible. In the past there was a work around to buy an app that you couldn't get directly on your device due to this issue.
You could get the app from your computer using iTunes in order to get it into your library. That way you could then just go to your list of purchased apps on your device and download the older version from there. Apple, in their infinite wisdom, removed the app store from iTunes late last year. So to use the work around you will want to download iTunes 12.6.3 that Apple made available at. I have just tried to install Kindle on my Ipad Mini 1st gen, (ios 9.3.5) and was unable. I used the Apple App store first and got the same message everyone else gets where I need ios 10.0 or higher (which is not possible on this device) and no option for a different version of the app to install.
When I try to then download from Amazon Appstore, all I get is a link to the Apple Store so its a cycle into the same issue and now download. What is the option for the older devices? Surely Amazon would want customers to read and still have the ability to download books for any device? This is very frustrating to a book lover knowing I cannot read or download my books to this older device.
Unfortunately, this is how the world works now. A device 5+ yrs old gets considered 'old', becomes incompatible with more and more content, even eventually no longer supported by the manufacturer. People with Amazon or any other brand devices are finding out the same thing (not necessarily in re to the Kindle app), owing to the need to purchase a new device. Once a manufacturer stops supporting a device with upgraded software (which eventually happens due to it can't handling the faster programming and/or added feature(s) to upgrades), it in turn becomes less cost effective for app developers to make and maintain seperate apps for them.I do not speak for Amazon, nor any manufacturer or app builder. This is just knowledge from years of volunteering in Amazon help forums. I have just tried to install Kindle on my Ipad Mini 1st gen, (ios 9.3.5) and was unable. The kindle app will not download as it states ios 10 or later is needed. All other apps that had updated offered to download a prior app version that was compatible. The kindle does not offer this. While I prefer to use the kindle, if it won't let me on older device, I will switch my book buying and reading to the nook app as it downloaded and works fine. On Amazon, it states that if you have an older ios it will allow download of prior version; this is not the case and very frustrating.
